The big cerqua

The big cerqua

In the locality of Osteria di Serra dei Conti, on the left of the road that runs along the river, towards Arcevia, there is an oak tree, admirable for its size and bearing, which in local jargon is called «Cerqua grossa». This tree is 22 metres tall and has a diameter of about 5 metres. It is between 300 and 400 years old – a monumental tree among the longest-lived in the Marche region.

It has belonged for about 100 years to the Marzocchi family of Pesaro, whose members are described as people in whom love for their trees has always manifested itself as a family tradition and a transmission of genetic traits. Its main attraction is the forest of tentacular branches that sprout in every direction to form a crown that is the largest in the province and that, in the whole region, can perhaps be considered second only to the now famous oak «Pierigè» of Cingoli.
Unfortunately, in recent years, due to adverse circumstances related to weather events, the canopy has significantly decreased. The plant is in a discrete vegetative state.
